How to Move a TV Safely

Modern flatscreens crack easily if moved flat or unprotected. Here's how to pack and transport a TV so it arrives in one piece.

Flatscreen TVs are surprisingly fragile โ€” the panel can crack under pressure or if laid flat. A little care avoids an expensive mistake.

Use the original box if you have it

Nothing protects a TV better than the box and foam it came in. If you kept them, use them. If not, wrap the screen in a clean blanket or proper TV cover โ€” avoid taping anything directly onto the screen.

Always keep it upright

Never lay a flatscreen flat. With no support behind the panel, the glass can flex and crack โ€” and pressure on a laid-down screen is the most common way TVs die in a move. Keep it vertical at every stage.

Secure it upright in the van

Stand the TV between two soft, flat surfaces (e.g. the mattress and a sofa) so it can't tip, and strap it in place. Never stack anything on top of it.

Photograph the connections

Before unplugging, take a photo of the back so you know what goes where. Coil and bag the cables, and pack the remote and stand together.
