Gym equipment presents some of the most awkward moving challenges around โ heavy, irregular shapes, often on upper floors, and expensive to replace if something goes wrong. Here's how to approach it properly.
Inventory your equipment first
Before planning anything, list everything you're moving with approximate weights. This determines the vehicle size, number of people needed, and whether any specialist equipment is required. Key weights to know:
- Olympic barbell + plates: Can easily exceed 200kg total
- Power cage / squat rack: 100โ300kg depending on model
- Treadmill: 80โ150kg, often with folding mechanisms
- Adjustable dumbbells / weight sets: Surprisingly heavy in volume
- Rowing machine / elliptical: 50โ120kg, awkward shape
What needs disassembling?
Not everything, but some items are much easier to move in parts:
- Power racks and cages โ usually bolt together and can be broken down in 20โ30 minutes
- Treadmills โ most fold or have removable consoles
- Multi-gyms โ these are often impossible to move in one piece through standard doorways
- Weight plates โ always move separately, never leave them loaded on a bar or machine
Access is usually the hardest part
Most home gym equipment ends up in garages or spare rooms โ which were easy enough when it arrived in boxes. Getting it back out as assembled equipment is a different story. Measure doorways, hallways, and stairways before assuming anything will fit. A standard UK doorway is about 760mm wide; most squat racks are 1,100mm+ wide when assembled.
Do you need a specialist driver?
For most home gyms, an experienced man-with-a-van driver with a Luton van and a helper is sufficient. For very large commercial gyms or equipment over 300kg, you'll want a driver with a tail-lift vehicle and experience in heavy equipment moves.
The key is describing your equipment accurately when posting. A driver who knows what they're walking into will quote accurately and arrive prepared.
Tips for moving day
- Remove all weight plates before moving any machine โ even if the machine can technically hold them
- Protect flooring with furniture blankets or cardboard โ a dropped plate through a wooden floor is expensive
- Wrap rubber-coated weights in blankets to prevent them scratching paintwork or other equipment
- Mark which bolts go where if you disassemble anything โ take photos before you start
