A man with a van will shift almost anything you can fit in a van โ but there are some items drivers can't legally or safely carry. Knowing what to handle yourself avoids surprises on moving day.
Hazardous and flammable items
Most drivers won't carry petrol, diesel, gas bottles (BBQ/patio), fireworks, paint, aerosols, chemicals or other flammables โ it's a safety and insurance issue. Empty fuel from mowers and strimmers, and dispose of or transport these yourself.
Living things
Pets and livestock should travel with you, not in the back of a removal van. Many drivers also won't take houseplants on long-distance moves (they topple, leak and don't travel well) โ check first.
Valuables and important documents
Cash, jewellery, passports, and irreplaceable items are best kept with you. Keep them in your essentials box, not the van.
Waste and rubbish
Clearing out junk is a different job: carrying away waste legally requires a licensed waste carrier. If you need rubbish removed, post it as a rubbish-removal job so a licensed driver picks it up.
When in doubt, declare it
Always describe unusual, very heavy or awkward items when you post your job, so drivers can confirm they'll take it and bring the right kit. For specialist loads (pianos, hot tubs, safes), use the matching specialist service.
